The willingness to learn

As a mother of two young children, life is all about learning, whilst also having fun……but the learning is something that a child not only thrives upon…..but if it’s done in a fun and challenging way, can actually bring lots of joy and pleasure……

I remember back to the days of realising just how long we spend at School……the day it dawned on me that I would actually spend 5 days a week at school…..for years….and years!!!!

The same happened with my son the other day…..as he calculated his age compared to his Dads age….and then his Grandads age….he’d quickly fathomed out that he’s going to spend a fair amount of his life learning….

Thankfully he didn’t seem too despondent….but he did ask me then why I am still learning! This did of course make me smile….and he really was serious about why I was still doing it….

So I took him through some of the reasons that I still enjoy learning….how learning & development is brought into all aspects of peoples lives….and that it’s not just about going to school or university…but it’s also about learning life skills…how to treat people…how to assert yourself……for some how to make friends…….the list I told him..”is endless”

It eventually got to the moment where he’d had enough of our discussion….(he’d spent enough time learning about learning)…..although he did have one last question….and that was” what have you learnt that has really helped you in the past week?!”
Quite an interesting question I thought……so instead of doing more taking….I showed him a recent video that I made after attending a course last week….. (see the video below)

He watched it in amazement and then continued with his investigative styled questioning technique……asking me to give him some examples of how this has helped me….

The results for both of us were enlightening to say the least……my son seemed happier knowing that everyone worries, that worrying is ok….but that sometimes worrying too much is not a good thing……it reminded me of some of the personality the traits about myself, and how occasionally I need to steer away from them…….(to stop ruminating was a major one!)…I also know that I’m a brilliant procrastinator much to my friends disbelief….
Without this recent “learning” I would have handled what was a difficult week for me last week in a totally different manner….As it happened it all turned out nicely as they say! (However most of that was as I had learned how to deal with obstacles in a different way to the way I would normally!)

So….there you have it……whatever your age, mindset, academic ability or your achievements……to stop learning could be a rocky road to a hole that you may not want to be in…..it would also be such a shame…….LIVE TO LEARN…..don’t LEARN TO LIVE!!!

Here’s the video that I mentioned too…….I will continue to watch it back to relearn my learning….and to remind me how effective that day was for me…..
